This finely carved (probably) North Italian mantel clock is executed in parcel-gilt and beechwood and reflects the enduring European fascination with the exotic cultures of Asia. The white enamel dial, with Roman and Arabic numerals, is set within a drum-shaped case surmounted by a seated Chinese figure holding a parasol. The figure is carried in an elaborate palanquin (sedan chair) by two attendants, while a stylised palmtree behind the group adds depth and movement to the composition. Notice that the pendulum is carved as a hanging monkey!
The rectangular base is decorated with an elegant Vitruvian scroll frieze and rests on ball feet.
Popular among aristocratic and wealthy interiors, such clocks combined refined horology with imaginative Orientalist ornament, making them both functional timepieces and striking decorative objects. The movement is probably a French addition.
