This plate was made for the European market in the Famille Rose palette, a style that emerged during the Yongzheng period (1723–1735).
Depicted within a scroll-shaped is a scene from the famous Chinese play and novel Romance of the Western Chamber (Xi Xiang Ji, 西厢记), written during the Yuan Dynasty by Wang Shifu (1260–1336), based on an earlier Tang Dynasty tale.
The scene called ‘Repudiation of the Billet-Doux’, depicts the young scholar Zhang Sheng and the beautiful Cui Yingying, who have fallen in love despite the objections of Yingying’s family. After exchanging love letters, Yingying appears to reject Zhang but she hints to arranges a secret meeting. Unable to resist, Zhang climbs over the garden wall to reach the terrace where Yingying awaits him with her faithful maid Hongniang.
The story tells of the romance between the talented but poor scholar Zhang Sheng and Cui Yingying. After rescuing Yingying from a band of bandits while travelling to the civil service examinations, Zhang is promised her hand in marriage by her mother. She later breaks this promise, forcing the lovers to endure a series of trials before Zhang ultimately succeeds in the examinations and wins Yingying as his bride.
Several scenes from Romance of the Western Chamber were especially popular on Chinese export porcelain, inspired by the woodblock illustrations that depicted scenes of the play. The detailed quality of the painting suggests a Yongzheng date, although similar examples were also produced during the early Qianlong period. Note the uncommon white enamel used in the wall.
