This exquisite pair of Chinese blue and white deep dishes from the Kangxi period (1662–1722) beautifully displays the duality of traditional Chinese narrative art, showcasing two legendary classic tales of love and heroism through finely hand painted scenes. Both dishes have marks of the period on their back and are moulded with a scalloped rim.

The left dish depicts a scene from The Romance of the Yang Family Generals, while the right one illustrate narrative acts from Wang Shifu’s famous Yuan dynasty play, The Romance of the Western Chamber (Xixiang Ji).

The first Scene ilustrates a pivotal romantic encounter from the legend of the female warrior 'Mu Guiying'. She is the figure mounted on horseback, heavily armed, and returning to camp. The two women standing with the parasol are waiting to receive her, capturing the moment she returns to her fortress after successfully capturing 'Yang Zongbao' in battle. The story is about a clash that famously began with an armed confrontation but ended with her choosing him to be her husband. She is recognizable because of feathers rising from the headwear. Those are signature pheasant feathers (lingzi) worn by high-ranking warriors or generals in traditional Chinese opera.

The dish with depictions of The Romance of the Western Chamber is showing 'Cui Yingying and the Reversal of the Marriage Pact'. This is Part 2, Act 3 (The Feast) of the romantic play, where 'Madame Cui' hosts a banquet to supposedly celebrate Scholar 'Zhang Sheng' saving the family from bandits. Instead of offering her daughter's hand in marriage as promised, Madame Cui instructs Cui Yingying to present a ceremonial wine cup and a plate of gifts to 'Zhang Sheng.'

Condition: Very good, no restorations or hairlines. Both with some rim fittings.
