This finely modelled Chinese biscuit porcelain group depicts a standing couple in conversation, their heads gently turned towards one another. The male figure wears a traditional 'hanfu'-style hat and a flowing robe covered in a soft celadon glaze, while the female figure is shown with her hair arranged in a topknot, wearing a blue jacket over a long robe carrying a bag or water barrel. The figures are decorated in a restrained palette of pale celadon and underglaze cobalt blue, allowing the elegant modeling and subtle facial expressions to stand out.

These figures became particularly famous for collectors after their found in the 1985 salvaged Nanking Cargo of the sunken VOC ship The Geldermalsen (1752).
