Vividly and finely decorated in the famille verte palette this plate with a mythical qilin confronting a phoenix in flight is a real eyecatcher.
The surrounding is beautifully filled with scrolling clouds rockwork, peony blossoms and pine trees. The central scene is encircled by radiating panels depicting various noble animals, including a tiger, a lion and a deer. Furthermore, The broad rim is decorated with floral sprays in a diaper-pattern ground. The rim panels contain paintings of butterflies, symbolising longevity, beauty and transformation. The reverse of this larger plate is marked with artemisia leaf mark.
The scene refers to two important symbols in Chinese mythology. The qilin (麒麟), a mythical creature often depicted with features of a deer, dragon and horse, symbolizes prosperity, wisdom and benevolent rule. The phoenix (fenghuang 凤凰) represents harmony, peace and good fortune. Together, they form an auspicious combination in Chinese symbolism, associated with prosperity, virtue and harmony.
