Each plate is finely painted in underglaze cobalt blue (qinghua), the central medallion depicting two figures from the Yang Jia Jiang (楊家將) “Generals of the Yang Family” cycle. We can see the celebrated warrior Mu Guiying, mounted on horseback, capturing her future husband, Yang Zongbao, beneath branches of flowering peony.

The lobed rim is richly decorated with six alternating panels, three enclosing scenes of a horseman with a flag-bearing attendant, and three featuring blossoming chrysanthemum and peony emerging from rockwork. The reverse is surrounded by six 'ruyi heads' beneath scrolling borders around the rim.

The Yang Jia Jiang legends recount the bravery and unwavering loyalty of the Yang family, defenders of Imperial China during the Liao (907–1125) and Western Xia (1038–1227) conflicts. Among them, Mu Guiying stands out as a figure of courage and devotion. She is  a warrior renowned for her tactical genius and her steadfast service to the empire.
This set, dating to around 1700 in the Kangxi reign, exemplify the narrative richness and technical finesse of Qing blue and white export porcelain.
