The central medallion of these Kangxi plates depicts figures from the Yang Jia Jiang (楊家將) “Generals of the Yang Family” cycle. The celebrated Yang Family Generals was one of the most enduring legends of Chinese history and folklore originating in the Northern Song dynasty (960–1127).
We can see the celebrated female warrior Mu Guiying, mounted on horseback, followed by Yang Zongbao. The border is richly decorated of with a scroll of flowering peony or prunus
The Yang Jia Jiang legends recount the bravery and unwavering loyalty of the Yang family, defenders of Imperial China during the Liao (907–1125) and Western Xia (1038–1227) conflicts. Among them, Mu Guiying stands out as a figure of courage and devotion. She is a warrior renowned for her tactical genius and her steadfast service to the empire. This charger exemplify the narrative richness and technical finesse of Qing blue and white export porcelain.
The women of the Yang family participated in battles after many of their husbands and male relatives had been killed or wounded in combat. Renowned for their unwavering loyalty, the female warriors took up arms to continue the family’s military service. Their martial training and departure for battle became a favourite subject in Chinese art, representing bravery, determination, and sacrifice in the face of adversity. The story stands symbols of courage, patriotism and has a love component. In the end Yang Zongbao does marry the legendary female warrior Mu Guiying.
